Geothermal heat pump is a heat pump that uses the Earth as either a heat source when operating heat mode or heat sink, when operating in cooling mode. The source or sink is used to change the state of the refrigeration gas in the refrigeration circuit, which results in the ability of the appliance to remove heat or provide delivery heat. This is known as Water Source system which is different from air source heat pump.
Geothermal Heat pumps are also known as 'Geo Exchange, earth coupled, ground source or water source heat pump for clearly differentiating them from Air source heat pumps. Ground pump heat pumps draw energy from shallow ground. In spite of the name Geothermal energy, the energy used is originated from Sun and not from the center of the earth. Geothermal energy from the center of Earth is available only in places where volcanic activity comes close to the surface.
Geothermal Heat pumps are different than other conventional furnace or boiler by its ability to transfer heat against the method of producing the heat through combustion.
Geothermal systems are able to transfer heat to and from the ground with minimum use of electricity.
The high initial purchasing cost of Geothermal heat pump, the payback period is relatively short.
Geothermal systems are recognized as one of the most effective heating and cooling systems available in the market.
