A Heat pump is a machine or a device which is used to move heat from location of source to sink or heat sink location by using mechanical work. Generally the heat pump technology removes heat from low temperature to high temperature heat sink. Heat pumps can also operate to provide heat. In heating, ventilation and air conditioning applications(HVAC),a heat pump is normally referred to as vapor-compression refrigeration device that includes a reversing valve and optimized heat exchangers so that the direction of heat flow may be reversed.
There are two types of heat pumps, they are Compression heat pump and Absorption heat pump. Compression heat pump always operates on mechanical energy such as electricity whereas Absorption heat pump can run on heat energy through electricity or burning fuels.
Air-source heat pump,is the most widely used heat pump type as the installation is quite easy as compared to other types of heat pumps. But these suffer the limitations due to their use of outside air as heat source or sink resulting in lower efficiency. Ground source heat pumps have high efficiency than Air source heat pump because they draw heat from the ground or the groundwater which remains at constant temperature for all the year round below the depth of about 8 feet.
